Interesting to note that the writing of these overlapped Patrick O'Brian writing the Aubrey books. Pope was much better known for a long time, then suddenly O'Brian caught the popular attention. It's all very strange. Arguably these editions of the Pope books exist only becuase of the attention O'Brian got (they're not published by a mainstream house, they're from McBooks Press, which seems to specialize in this sort of book).
You'll be glad to hear, I hope, that he isn't actually really appointed "governor" this early in his career.
