Book Note: Jack Broughton, Going Downtown

I read this book about 10-Nov-2006. This is the first time I've read this book. The book is copyright 1988. This note was last modified Sunday, 17-Dec-2006 10:21:07 PST.

This note does not contain major spoilers for the book.

Non-fiction, hence not capable of being spoiled by my rules.

This is mostly the story about the F-105 wings that hit targets in North Vietnam. As I think we all know by now, it was a fucked-up war.

This was the result of the strong conflict about the propriety of the war, it seems to me. Those opposed limited anything they could, and those in favor did everything that was left. Neither side had any respect left for the other by the end (or perhaps rather sooner).

And it left the boys at the sharp end in an impossible position.

It's bizarre that Johnson was viewed as "pro-war", to the extent that Nixon won as the peace candidate (with Humphrey tainted by being too loyal to Johnson).

Lots of this dynamic is playing out now.
