Book Note: Res Stout, The Black Mountain

I read this book about 10-Aug-2002. This is the first time I've read this book. The book is copyright 1954. This note was last modified Thursday, 19-Dec-2002 16:35:43 PST.

This note contains spoilers for the book.

This book is stamped as my copy, but I'd swear I hadn't read it before. It must have somehow gotten lost in the shuffle when I came home with a stack from Uncle Edgar's one day. But I couldn't have forgotten Marko Vukcic being murdered, or Nero and Archie tramping around Montenegro on foot, could I?

Archie gives us a warning up front that most of the conversation in the book isn't actually verbatim, since he doesn't speak Serbo-Croatian, or even Italian. Wolfe, of course, does (along with at least 6 other languages). In fact Archie does just a bit of an "Ugly American" impression, even though we're seeing the story through his eyes.
