The third Wolfe novel. Events long ago in a frontier mining settlement come home to roost in New York City when a British peer comes to town on a diplomatic mission.

An attempt to create an alibi by faking the sound of a gunshot over the phone fools everybody, but Wolfe deduces the murder couldn't have occurred then and is willing to consider a trick.
