Book Note: Jo Walton, The Rebirth of Pan

I read this book about 10-May-2013. This is the first time I've read this book. The book is copyright 1994. This note was last modified Wednesday, 07-Aug-2013 15:35:58 PDT.

This note contains spoilers for the book.

This is an old novel never published professionally. Jo has said online that, with her current skills, she doesn't really know how to fix it, and yet still likes some of what it does, and she decided to issue it as-is.

It's a remarkable book (and, I believe, she's now working on doing something with some of the ideas that drove this book in a publishable form). It's set in a fairly modern Greece where the old gods still have followers, and the Orthodox church doesn't always accept that. There have been versions legally available online, but I'm not sure about any of the versions I can find now.

And there are a bunch of bad people planning to gain great magical power from a major sacrifice of children to bring Pan back. But other forces want sort of the same thing but through less drastic means. The action part of the plot centers around a recreation of the Battle of Lepanto.

As always with Jo's books, I found the characters quite interesting, and the story worth following.
