Book Note: David Weber, Out of the Dark

I read this book about 22-Mar-2014. This is the first time I've read this book. The book is copyright 2010. This note was last modified Sunday, 30-Mar-2014 12:52:59 PDT.

Somehow I missed noticing when this was released. It's a Tor book, not Baen, and it's a new series.

This is the old "aliens visit Earth, find us primitive, decide to invade, and find we've advanced a lot when the invasion fleet arrives" story. The shongairi, the bad boys of the Hegemony, get permission to colonize here, since the weed eaters who mostly run things are a bit afraid of the omnivores living on Earth. The first contact crew happened to watch the battle of Agincourt, and think we're a bit overly aggressive, and very stupid.

Judging by what I hope is a spoiler for early details on the back cover, they're going to capture some Earthmen, who will then escape spectactularly, apparently tearing the aliens apart with their bare hands. We'll see how this plays out.

So far, though, we're just introducing the characters. Looks like there are going to be various guerilla outfits operating, with American veterans playing a prominent role.

Surprisingly, the humans win in the end.

Well, sort of. Vlad Dracula turns up, having turned his life around over the last few centuries, creates a few new vampires, and they blow into all the alien bases like smoke and kill everybody, and ride the shuttles up to the starships and kill everybody there, and turn the industrial ships over to the humans, along with the neural educators with the entire Hegemony knowledge base embedded in them.

Pardon me while I go vomit.
