This is one of the "Rick Brant" series of science adventure books. They were packaged something like the Tom Swift Jr. books, but were somewhat less stfnal, and rather better written.

I only managed to ever find one of these books while I was a child. Since then I've acquired a few more and read them, and the quality level seems fairly consistent.
