Book Note: W.E. Butterworth, Orders to Vietnam

I read this book about 2-May-2004. This is the first time I've read this book. The book is copyright 1968. This note was last modified Saturday, 04-Aug-2012 10:46:59 PDT.

This note contains spoilers for the book.

Another one actually published under his own name! And on the subject that finally made him a bestseller, too.

A kid finishes helicopter school, is sent to Vietnam, and flies there. Starts out with orders from Fort Rucker that will look nostalgically familiar to Brotherhood of War fans.

No sign of any question about the rightness of the war, of course. No doubts about the government we're supporting—in fact no mention of its existence at all.

The main character seems to be the son of a real asshole. He's not on stage for long, but as seen reflected through his son and his wife, he doesn't rate very high. The kid reconciles to him, not very reasonably, at the end of the book.
