In the Young Wizards universe, but dealing with the cat wizards who keep the Grand Central gates functioning. In fact Kit and Rita make an appearance, providing backup.
The author has a lot of fun with presenting humans from the viewpoint of cat wizards. Also with explaining cat behavior from the inside. Pretty reasonable, really. The social ramifications of having nine lives are interesting, too.
Also contains an absolutely harrowing description of drowning a batch of kittens, from the inside of the bag. And the resulting PTSD.
