Is that the Ptolemy Tompkins who wrote /This Tree Grows Out of Hell/? Yes, that was an influence. But we call this guy Toliman for short; I just couldn't resist the combination of assonance and alliteration, and there was a copy of this strange essay about pre-Columbian Mesoamerican religion right on my bookshelf, so your editor's name got thrown into my cat's middle name just because it sounded good.
