Unedited version of the previous picture. The atmospheric haze reduces the contrast a lot, and shifts the color balance. The effect increases with distance.

The solution is to expand the reduced color range in each channel separately, and then rebalance; to increase the contrast (I use an S-shaped curve); and to add a second curves adjustment through a gradient mask to make the distant landscape more closely match the nearer landscape.
