Sigma 120-400mm Lens
Decided I needed something longer before prices went up. This may well not be as good as the Nikon 80-400, but it probably focuses faster (AF-S, which the Nikon version doesn’t have). And it’s a lot cheaper.
I owned a 400mm lens with the Pentax system I had in college and after; a great big huge thing, f/6.3, and preset diaphragm (not automatic). This relatively cheap zoom ($750) is 120-400mm f4.5-5.6, with image stabilization. And it focuses down to a hair less than 5 feet.
And based on just a bit of preliminary play, it’s not half bad.

(If you look closely, you’ll see strange texture over the background. That’d be because this was shot through a dark rope net separating me from the eagle.)

“Where I Write” Book Project
Just heard today about a project that I hope will become a book of photos of SF/fantasy authors’ workspaces by my online friend Kyle Cassidy of Armed America fame. And here’s another post on it by Michael Swanwick.
The preliminary examples look really good to me.

(Click through the photo for Kyle’s site about the book, with more samples.)
I am amused to see that Kyle says this was partly inspired by this by Jeff and Geri.
Some examples will be appearing in the Anticipation sourvenir book.
